ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΑ ΘΡΑΚΗ ΑΙΓOΣ ΠΟΤΑΜI
The name ΑΙΓOΣΠΟΤΑΜOI - Aegospotami meaning Goat River and is the ancient Greek name for a small river issuing into the Hellespont [Çanakkale Boğazı], northeast of Sestos.
Aegospotami is an ancient Greek river that flows into the Hellspont region towards the northeast of Sestos. The river is extremely important in understanding the Greek war of 405 BCE in which Lysander defeated the Athenian fleet and thereby bringing end to the Peloponnesian War. It now sits on the northeast of the Turkish town Sutluce, atop Dardenelles. The river was supposedly hit by a meteorite somewhere in 467 BCE as per ancient sources that include the doctrines laid down by Aristotle and Pliny the Elder.
This river mouth was the scene of the decisive battle in 405 BC in which Lysander destroyed the Athenian fleet, ending the Peloponnesian War.
