Edirne, formerly known as Adrianople or Hadrianopolis [δριανούπολις], is a city in Turkey, in the northwestern part of the province of Edirne in Eastern Thrace.
The first settlement was established by the Odrysians, one of the Thracian tribes, under the name Orestias [Ὀρεστιάς] - Uskudama [Edirne name of the Thracian period] or Odrysia. The importance of the ancient city increased with the arrival of the Roman Emperor Hadrianus during his eastern journey in 123-124 AD, and the name of the ancient city was changed to Hadrianopolis [Αδριανούπολη].
note : in other ancient regions, there are other ancient city with the name of the Hadrianopolis.
