ΟΙ ΖΑΝΕΣ ΤΗΣ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑΣ - THE ZANES OF OLYMPIA

By the middle of the fourth century BC, bronze statues of Zeus lined the route to the Olympic stadium. [ there was a row of sixteen bronze statues of Zeus, called Zanes [ΖΑΝΕΣ] which is the plural of Zeus in the local dialect ].

They were erected in the fourth century BC and later, with the money of fines imposed upon persons or cities who had been found guilty of corruption in the games. The location of these statues was no coincidence, the athletes had to pass them when going to the running track.

The reasons for the fines were given in inscriptions on the statue bases and are extensively treated by Pausanias; when you take the road from the Metroön towards the stadium, you have on the left at the end of the Kronos Hill, directly against that hill on a platform of stone, a few steps upwards. Against that platform are bronze statues of Zeus, which are made from the gainings of the fines imposed on athletes who have broken the rules of the Games. They are called Zanes by the locals.

An inscription on the base of one of the first statues declares that << an Olympic victory is to be won not by money but by swiftness of foot or strength of body >>. Inscriptions on other bases similarly urged piety and warned against violations.

The first six of these were established in the 98th Olympiad, for which occasion this coins was struck, when the boxer Eupolos of Thessaly bribed his opponents.
