Son of Valentinian I, nephew of Valens. Inherited the rule of the East upon the death of Valens. He was appointed co-emperor by his father in 367. After his father's death, his infant brother Valentinianus was proclaimed co-emperor by the army. He was actually the sole ruler of the West and, after Valens' death, briefly the sole ruler of the empire.

Strongly anti-pagan. Declined the title of Pontifex Maximus and removed the Altar of Victory from the Senate House.

Actually, he was a Western Roman emperor. He is classified among the Byzantines because he was the head of the entire empire for some months.

Remained emperor of the West Empire until 383. Assassinated during the rebellion of Magnus Maximus.
