Commander in Moesia. Gratian appointed him co-emperor in the East. Born in Spain. Son of count Theodosius.
The last emperor to rule over the whole Roman Empire. He is responsible for the destruction of much of Greek-Roman civilization. Established Nicaean Orthodoxy and finished ancient gods. A saint for the Orthodox church.
Made Christianity the official state religion. Fostered the destruction of monuments like temples of Apollo [Delphi], the Vestal Virgins [Rome], the Serapeum [Alexandria].
After Gratian's death [383] made his son Arcadius co-ruler of the East and after Valentinian's suicide [392], appointed his son Honorius co-ruler in the West.
Actions & Events
• Allowed Goths [etc.] to settle in Empire lands along Danube. They had to assist Romans in war [foederati]
• He took severe measures against remnants of paganism. The end of the Olympic Games
• Expelled all heretics [Arians etc] Orthodoxy
• 390- Ordered Goth guards to kill 7,000 spectators in the circus of Thessaloniki as retaliation to a riot
