Klazomenai was the birthplace of the philosopher Anaxagoras, in his adulthood, he would move to Athens, where the thinker discussed his theories of cosmology and creation with such luminaries as Perikles and Euripedes.
Klazomenai was also home to large numbers of swans, and κλaζειν - Klazein meant ‘to scream’, and was used to describe the call of the swan. The ancient city coins shows swan symbol, is also a punning allusion to the name of the city itself.
