Panticapaeum [Παντικάπαιον Pantikapaion] was an ancient Greek city on the eastern shore of Crimea, which the Greeks called Taurica. The city lay on the western side of the Cimmerian Bosporus, and was founded by Milesians in the late 7th or early 6th century BC, on a hill later named Mount Mithridat. Its ruins now lie in the modern city of Kerch.
The name Παντικάπαιον-Pantikapaion is derived from the local Iranian expression 'Panti Kapa', meaning 'fish route', hinting at one of the areas greatest natural resources, the exceptionally rich fisheries of the Sea of Azov.
The wealth acquired through the export of its fish and other commodities allowed Pantikapaion to hire the finest artists of the time,resulting in the ancient coins of dies of spectacular power and beauty, as with this masterpieces.
