Maroneia was famous for its wine production. The wine was esteemed everywhere. The people of Maroneia’s veneration of Dionysus is evident not just from the city’s coins, but also from its famous Dionysian Sanctuary, the foundations of which can still be seen today.
Legend has it that Maroneia was founded by Maron, a priest of Apollo who was a son of Dionysos, and it is probably no coincidence that the place [with its Dyonysian sanctuary] produced sought after wine, said to be dilutable in much water.
The small dog below the horse easy, it is a spitz, which are characterized by their thick furs, small ears and curved tails.
Spitzes are often used as hunting and sledge dogs in Nordic climates today, but they were originally bred as watch and herding dogs - the latter of which appears to be the role of our spitz, as he is shepherding one of Maroneia's magnificent horses.
